Some people call this document as International drivers license (IDL). The International Driving Permit was a result of a 1949 United Nations (UN) convention on Road traffic. According to this convention many countries will respect and recognize an IDP from other endorsing countries for a year. An IDP allows people to drive a private motor vehicle in another nation when accompanied by a valid license from their home country. It will be a proof that people have a valid driver’s license in their nation. It will be needed people provide their IDP when they rent a car in a foreign country. This document is a little larger than a standard passport and its main purpose is to translate the original driver’s license information into almost a dozen languages (the five official UN languages such as English, Spanish, French, Russian, and Chinese and German, Italian, Arabic, the Scandinavian languages, and Portuguese. This way the IDP allows officials and other authorities in foreign countries “read” and interpret the license, even if they do not read English. It is important to know that people have to carry their driver’s license with their IDP, because this document doesn’t replace the driver license.
